Public Wi-Fi: useful security habits

Connect in a café, hotel or airport while understanding what a Secure connection can and cannot protect.

Confirm the network name

Ask staff for the exact Wi-Fi name. A familiar-looking name does not prove who runs the network. Disable automatic connections to unknown networks and do not install unfamiliar certificates they offer.

Separate network sign-in from Secure connection setup

If the network has a sign-in page, complete it, then enable the Secure connection and check the connection. Never enter your email, banking or Secure connection account password into a Wi-Fi sign-in form.

Know the protection boundary

A correctly configured Secure connection protects traffic routed through it between your device and the Secure connection server. It does not verify website authenticity or replace HTTPS. Use two-factor authentication for important accounts.

Finish the session carefully

Disconnect and forget the network when you no longer need it. Stop if an unexpected certificate warning appears. Consider a familiar network or mobile connection for a sensitive transaction.

Compatibility depends on your operating system and client version. System proxy mode may not cover every app; choose a connection mode using the guide.
